5 Vegan Baking Tips and Tricks

Don’t despair vegans, vegan baking can be both fun and delicious! After experiencing some of the challenges of baking vegan, I have composed a list of some tips and tricks for baking beginners!

Veganise Normal Recipes

From my experience, many online vegan recipes are not the best, especially cookie recipes. For example, I have tried to find the best recipe for brownies for several months, but all of the recipes had some kind of flaw. Last month, I tried making Tasty’s best vegan brownie recipe, and the brownie was greasy and hardened shortly after being taken out of the oven. Then, I came across a box of Duncan Hines brownie mix, which is surprisingly vegan! I made the brownies, but used flax eggs to replace the normal eggs. And let me tell you, these were the best vegan brownies I have ever made! They were chocolaty, gooey, and had a great texture. So, my personal tip is to veganise regular recipes!

Don’t Judge a Book by it’s Cover

Vegan baked goods do not necessarily brown. Since there is no butter in vegan recipes, the sweets do not typically have a browned color. For instance, pancakes and waffles do not have a significant golden brown glaze, instead they have a more palish tone. My tip is to not judge the readiness of the sweet dependent on the color. I suggest checking if it is baked all the way through by inserting a toothpick.

Baking Times

Cooking times may differ compared to normal recipes. Sometimes items start to burn when left on a high temperature. I suggest to bake items for a longer span of time, with a lower temperature.

Egg Replacer Tip

There are two egg replacers that I think work the best in baking, flax eggs and applesauce. I use flax eggs with breads, muffins, and cakes. My tip is to use applesauce when making pancakes or waffles. If you use flax eggs in pancakes or waffles, the seeds of the flax egg are very prominent, and the consistency is grainy. Applesauce adds a great flavor to your pancakes and waffles, and leaves you with a fluffier treat!

Milk Myth

When replacing milk in a recipe, there are multiple substitutes you can use including coconut, almond, and oat milk. A common myth is that the type of milk you use affects the taste of the baked goods. But once baked, the milk type does not affect the taste of the treat! On the other hand, the type of milk does affect the taste of smoothies and other non baked goods.
